Fire destroys canteen at St Jago High
The administrative staff at St Jago High School in St Catherine has asked all students, except those sitting examinations, to remain at home today, following a fire yesterday which gutted sections of the school's canteen.
This is the second school fire in three days after the art and craft department at Seaforth High in St Thomas was destroyed last Saturday during an early morning inferno.
Yesterday, firefighters were again called to a learning institution after smoke was seen coming from the cafeteria at St Jago High.
The school tweeted saying: "At approximately 2 p.m., there was fire in the cafeteria. We would like to assure you that everyone is safe and exams are still in progress."
A follow-up tweet read: "Examinations will continue as normal. Only essential examination and management staff should be at school tomorrow (today). Therefore, regular school will not be in progress."
The fire department confirmed the blaze, and told THE STAR that while the cause of the fire has not been ascertained, investigations are ongoing.
