Man charged with constable's murder
The Criminal Investigation Branch has charged one suspect in the murder of Constable Derron Henry, formerly of the Motorised Patrol Division, who was killed on May 22 at about 3:20 a.m.
The detectives charged Omar Ricketts also known as Demus or Alex, a vendor of a Chisholm Avenue, Kingston 13, address on Saturday.
Another suspect has since been held. His identity is being withheld pending further investigation.
Ganja seized in St Catherine
Detectives of the Narcotics Division arrested a man during an operation in the St Catherine South Division on Sunday.
According to the detectives, an anti-narcotics operation was being carried out in the division when a Toyota Noah vehicle was signalled to stop at the intersection of Lakes Pen and Municipal Boulevard.
The driver complied and during a search of the vehicle, nine knitted bags containing 43 parcels with compressed ganja weighing approximately 490lbs were found.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was arrested, while the vehicle and the ganja were seized.
He will be interviewed in the presence of his attorney before charges are laid.
The drugs have an estimated street value of more than $1.9 million.
Eighteen schools have ramps installed
The National Education Trust (NET) has confirmed that a total of 18 schools have had ramps installed under the Ramps in Schools project.
These include the St Ann's Bay Infant School, which was the National Labour Day project for education.
The project, which kicked off as part of the national Labour Day activities, came out of a motion moved in the Senate by Senator Floyd Morris, who is blind.
The NET was tasked by Education Minister Ruel Reid, to implement the project. It is aimed at initially providing basic ramp access in 130 public schools over a period of one year which commenced on Labour Day 2018. The remaining 112 will be done during the course of the year.
Blood bank hosts blood drive in St Ann
The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) in Jamaica will join the world in celebrating World Blood Donor Day on Thursday, June 14.
As part of its week of celebratory activities, the NBTS we will be hosting a blood drive at the Ocho Rios Baptist Church on Milford Road, Ocho Rios, St Ann, starting at 9 a.m. On Sunday, June 10 there will also be a church service at the Bethel Baptist Church on Hope Road, Kingston 10. On Tuesday, June 12, there will be a presentation to outstanding partners.
The week will conclude with a Donor Lyme at the National Chest Collection Centre on Barbican Road on Saturday, June 16.
